Orchard Fostering has been the leading private provider of Supported Lodging placements since 2009. The aim of supported lodgings is to offer young people in the care of Tusla, from the age of 16 years, a placement option that specifically prepares them for leaving care and living independently.
The focus of supported lodgings placements is on assisting the young person to develop their independent living skills, such as budgeting, shopping, cooking, travelling independently and development of self-advocacy skills. A key aspect of supported lodgings placement is the role modeling of the carer of these skills and the reduction of hands on assistance as the young person’s skills and confidence build.
As young people in supported lodgings placements are 16 years of age or over and able to manage many general aspects of day to day life independently, supported lodgings carers can be in full time employment. Given the different level of support, supervision and care typically required by young people in supported lodgings, these placements are often a good fit for single carers.
As a supported lodgings carer you are required to provide a clean, comfortable furnished room and access to facilities within the household, washing machines, cooker etc. with young people requiring support to develop independent travel skills, it is important that you live near accessible transport links. As with all types of care placements, providing emotional support to the young person is an important part of the supported lodgings carer role.
Young people in the care of the TUSLA come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds and can require care placements of different lengths. The assessed needs of the young person is matched closely to the suitability and availability of the prospective supported lodgings carer.
