Do you need training to become a foster parent?

Training is a mandatory part of becoming a Foster Carer. Like in any role, there are many skills required. Some of these are skills you may naturally have, but others need to be enhanced and broadened with the help of professionals. This is where preparation training for foster carers comes in. Every Orchard Fostering Foster Carer takes part in Preparation Training – this ensures that the young people we work with are getting the best possible care in their foster placements.

What foster training will be provided?

Foster Carer training is a crucial element of our assessment process. Throughout the training process, you learn vital skills all about the Foster Carer role, as we cover all the areas you need to know about in order to begin your fostering journey. How long is foster training, you may wonder? Our initial preparation training programme takes place over two and a half days at times convenient for you prior to the completion of your assessment. These days are spent getting up to speed with the skills required for foster care. Our training is designed to give you a full understanding of foster care and what young people require from Foster Carers.

As well as our initial training, we offer a wide range of support when you begin your fostering journey, all centred around enhancing and increasing the skills to foster. These training courses are wide-ranging and are extremely useful to any and all foster carers – no matter your experience level. They range from learning about the impact of early life trauma, to staying safe online.

What does fostering training involve?

Foster Carer training involves every aspect of foster care. At Orchard Fostering, we provide training across a wide range of disciplines.
